The Warming Center Community is a collective of interdenominational churches and service organizations within the county. For the past seven years, we have united our efforts to operate a warming shelter for the unhoused during the critical winter months from December to April.
Our shelter is graciously hosted in the basement of Ss. Cyril & Methodius, located at 828 New Jersey Avenue, in the alley between the church and the school.
We aim to provide our services from December to April, opening our doors from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM daily.
Guests are welcome to arrive between 6:45 PM and 7:45 PM. Post 7:45 PM, entry is restricted to those with a police referral. Re-entry is not permitted for guests who leave after 7:45 PM.
A nurturing warm meal is served around 8:00 PM, courtesy of various organizations, families, and local restaurants.
Mornings start at 5:30 AM with a wake-up call and simple breakfast items for our guests.
Over the past seven years, our shelter has varied in attendance, accommodating anywhere from one to fourty-five guests per night.
Our capacity is 35, but we will accomodate on especially frigid nights.
Volunteers are required to complete a standard application form.
You will be assigned a shift to support and serve our guests. Shift options are 6:30 PM – 10:00 PM, and 5:00 AM – 8:00 AM. We ensure no volunteer works alone and strive for a schedule that does not require any volunteer to serve more than once every eight days.
However, you are welcome to indicate your availability and how often you wish to serve.
PM Shift volunteers play a crucial role in welcoming our guests, serving meals, and ensuring a comfortable transition to evening rest.
This shift operates from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM.

AM Shift volunteers assist in the morning routine, helping with wake-up, clean-up, and ensuring a smooth start to our guests' day.
This shift runs from 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM.
Ready to make mornings brighter?
Our guests are greeted with a warm meal upon their arrival, generously provided by local restaurants and our dedicated volunteers. We coordinate volunteers to prepare home-cooked meals for approximately 40-60 individuals.
If you have a passion for cooking and serving the community, we invite you to join us in this vital role.
Our dedicated staff members work the overnight shift in pairs, maintaining a secure and peaceful environment for our sleeping guests from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
Currently, we do not require volunteer assistance for this role, but we value your interest and support in our other volunteering capacities.
